On 8 September 2026, Berlin Risk supported an ACAMS Germany Chapter event examining recent developments in global sanctions policy and the practical challenges facing sanctions professionals. The in-person event was co-hosted by the ACAMS Germany Chapter and Morrison Foerster’s Sanctions team at the firm’s offices in Berlin.
The discussion focused on developments in EU and US sanctions policy, emerging circumvention risks and best practices for implementing effective sanctions compliance frameworks within financial institutions and other companies. The event also addressed the growing convergence between sanctions and anti-money laundering compliance – an area of particular relevance to Berlin Risk’s work in integrity due diligence, financial-crime risk and investigations.
Speakers included Christian Plate, Head of the Sanctions Policy Taskforce at the German Federal Foreign Office; Rudy Haddad, Global Head of Sanctions and Export Controls; and John E. Smith, Co-head of Morrison Foerster’s National Security Practice and a member of the ACAMS Advisory Board.
The discussion was moderated by Felix Helmstaedter, Partner and Head of the European National Security Practice at Morrison Foerster LLP. The event gave sanctions and compliance practitioners an opportunity to exchange perspectives on circumvention schemes and the practical implementation of sanctions compliance obligations.
