While illegal/unregulated sports betting is a major conduit of money laundering and match-fixing, from the AML/CFT perspective, it is still a relatively under-explored area in comparison with other, more established types of money laundering and fincrime in general.
In the article, Filip attempts to showcase how easy it is to place bets online on lower-tier football league games where risk of match-fixing is high. It only takes a few seconds to find (often illegal) betting platforms on Telegram with exactly zero KYC requirements. Anyone can place bets completely anonymously on these platforms, including on games in the fifth Bavarian league. This is despite the fact that betting on amateur sports in Germany is illegal.
